The University of Maryland's Philip Merrill College of Journalism has added six Sony FX30 compact cinema cameras to a fleet that already includes roughly 40 Sony ENG cameras. Students begin with conventional electronic-news-gathering operation before moving into documentary and more cinematic assignments.
The programme points to S-Cinetone colour, dynamic range, autofocus and integration with wireless audio as relevant teaching features. The aim is to keep familiar operational concepts while exposing students to a different sensor, lens and picture-management workflow.
