French network operator TDF has activated an initial 5G Broadcast coverage area across Paris, Reims, Bourges and Le Havre. Big Blue Marble is contributing its Nakolos 5G Broadcast Core and engineering support as the work moves beyond a June launch event.
The network is intended to deliver television, radio and public-warning services directly to compatible mobile devices without a SIM card, Wi-Fi connection or mobile-data subscription. Nakolos is based on 3GPP specifications and is reported to include the 5G Broadcast capabilities introduced in Release 19.
The deployment creates an opportunity to test interoperability and operations across several metropolitan areas rather than a single venue. Broadcast delivery can provide one-to-many scale and a resilient path for public information, while conventional mobile broadband remains available for personalised or return-channel functions.
TDF has not published population coverage, receiver availability, service bitrates, audience adoption or a commercial launch timetable. The current phase demonstrates infrastructure deployment, not yet a mass-market consumer service.
