Sony has announced five R Series system cameras: HDC-5500R, HDC-5500RV, HDC-3500R, HDC-3500RV and HDC-3200R. The family uses 2/3-inch three-chip 4K global-shutter imaging intended for studio, sports and outside-broadcast operation.
HDR support runs across the range, while selected models add high-frame-rate capture, ultra-high bitrate operation and 12G-SDI connectivity. The different variants let facilities match camera heads to existing camera-control and transport requirements.
Why it matters
Large-sensor cameras attract attention, but 2/3-inch three-chip systems remain central to live sports because they work with long broadcast zooms and avoid rolling-shutter artefacts. A refreshed family protects that established operating model while extending 4K and HDR capability.
