Sonnet has introduced the Breakaway Box 850 T5, an external graphics enclosure built around Thunderbolt 5. It allows a supported Windows 11 computer to use a full-size desktop GPU for video editing, colour, rendering, visual effects and AI processing.
An 850-watt internal power supply is intended to support power-hungry current graphics cards. The enclosure also exposes connectivity for peripherals, allowing the same Thunderbolt link to extend a workstation beyond graphics acceleration.
The product is aimed at laptops and compact desktops whose internal GPU cannot be replaced or expanded. For media teams, that can separate mobile computer selection from the heaviest desk-based render requirement, provided application and driver support remain stable.
External GPU performance is shaped by Thunderbolt bandwidth, host implementation and software. Buyers should validate the exact GPU, driver, application, display and storage combination; the enclosure does not guarantee parity with the same card on an internal PCIe bus.
