MovieLabs has launched version 3.0 of its Ontology for Media Creation. OMC gives software applications a shared language for describing narrative, production and media elements, along with a common exchange format for moving that context between tools.
The model is intended to connect script, production management, workflow orchestration, editorial and post-production. At IBC, MovieLabs demonstrated OMC 3.0 in the accelerator film One Small Crawl, showing how narrative context can travel alongside assets instead of being rebuilt at each handoff.
Studios describe the goal as avoiding one rigid, monolithic pipeline. A shared ontology can let facilities assemble different tools for each production while retaining consistent identities and relationships for scenes, characters, assets, versions and production decisions.
MovieLabs says OMC 3.0 will be available under a Creative Commons licence by the end of 2026, so the announced version is not yet a final broadly distributed release. Implementers will need to test schema extensions, versioning, access control and round trips between independent applications.
