The Media Coding Industry Forum has started an open-source decoder project for Versatile Video Coding, also known as VVC or H.266. Its aim is to give application developers and device makers a practical software baseline while hardware decoding remains uneven across the market.
The first roadmap targets Android arm64 optimisation, a stable C and C++ interface, FFmpeg integration and Android JNI access. Ittiam Systems is the initial development partner, bringing an implementation focus rather than limiting the work to conformance examples.
An accessible, optimised decoder can lower the cost of evaluating VVC in players, services and devices. It can also provide a common reference for interoperability work, performance comparisons and early deployments that cannot depend on a particular system-on-chip.
MC-IF has not yet named the repository, software licence, release milestones or target decoding resolutions and frame rates. Patent licensing for VVC remains separate from the software licence, so implementers will still need to assess commercial obligations before deployment.
