InterDigital and NHK are preparing a software demonstration of multilayer Versatile Video Coding at IBC2026. It focuses on two functions in the VVC Multilayer Main 10 profile: content overlays and spatial or quality scalability.
NHK's presentation keeps the base programme separate from optional caption or sign-language layers and coordinates those choices with MPEG-H 3D Audio. A viewer can therefore select an enhanced presentation without the distributor sending a completely independent full programme encode.
InterDigital's scalability work uses an enhancement layer to improve spatial resolution or picture quality above the base stream. The companies link the demonstration to an MPEG verification test published in April 2026 as document AG 5 N208.
Layered coding could reduce duplication when services need several accessibility or quality variants, but the announcement does not provide bitrate comparisons, decoder complexity or device support. The system is a technical demonstration, not evidence of broad consumer deployment.
