Canon has announced the EOS R8 Mark II, a compact 24.2-megapixel full-frame mirrorless camera with in-body image stabilisation. Canon calls it the lightest full-frame EOS body with IBIS, at about 546 grams including battery and one card.
For video, the camera records UHD 4K at up to 60p from a 6K-oversampled readout and Full HD at up to 180p. Stabilisation is rated at as much as 7.5 stops in the centre of the frame, and the body gains an autofocus joystick and revised physical controls.
The combination targets small crews that need a lightweight B camera, gimbal body or hybrid stills/video unit without giving up sensor stabilisation. Canon also supports an optional adapter for its three-pin remote-controller connection.
The camera uses one SD card and the LP-E17 battery platform, so record redundancy and sustained high-frame-rate runtime need scrutiny. Canon lists roughly 40 minutes of 4K60 operating time under its test conditions, not a guarantee for hot sets or external power configurations.
