Boland Communications has introduced a SMPTE ST 2110 option for its 4K HDR broadcast monitors. The interface uses a 25GbE SFP28 connection and is designed to place uncompressed IP reception inside the display rather than rely on a separate conversion device.
According to the product announcement reported by TV Tech, one interface can serve as many as two monitors. Support for SMPTE ST 2022-7 is included, allowing protected reception across redundant network paths when the surrounding infrastructure is configured for seamless switching.
Why it matters
Native IP monitoring can remove external gateway boxes from a control room or technical area. That reduces cabling and potential points of failure, while making the monitor part of the managed media network. It also shifts more responsibility to network configuration, timing and device management.
The 25GbE interface is a practical match for uncompressed UHD signals, but operators still need to account for multicast design, PTP timing, bandwidth headroom and the exact video and ancillary-data formats supported. ST 2022-7 improves resilience only when the two network paths are genuinely independent.
What remains open
Detailed latency measurements, supported ST 2110 essence combinations and interoperability results were not included in the report. Buyers should confirm those details, along with licensing and redundancy behaviour, against the final shipping specification.
