Avid and FilmLight have announced a partnership to embed a Baselight-powered colour experience more deeply inside Media Composer. The companies want colour to behave as a native part of editorial rather than a separate finishing stage reached through exports, rendered intermediates and conforms.

The work covers four areas: colour tools in the Media Composer timeline, continuity from dailies through delivery, FilmLight colour science at editorial scale and expanded online finishing. For productions that still require the full Baselight environment, the roadmap includes a renderless round trip so editorial and grading decisions can remain connected as metadata instead of being baked into successive media files.

The technical value is preservation of creative intent across departments. Editors can see and adjust a closer representation of the final look, while colourists receive a more coherent decision history and fewer flattened handoffs. Facilities may also finish some projects entirely in Media Composer while retaining a path to specialist Baselight work. The announcement describes direction rather than a released feature set: no version numbers, delivery dates, licensing terms or interoperability specification have yet been provided.
