Calrec has introduced Apex M6, a one-rack-unit modular audio I/O platform for interfacing, routing, bridging and network-edge deployment. It was launched alongside the Type RT console range at IBC2026.
The design puts configurable connectivity in a compact frame rather than requiring each studio or remote position to carry a larger processing system. That can support distributed audio, format conversion and incremental expansion at the edge of a production network.
A modular edge is valuable when a facility mixes legacy baseband connections with several audio-over-IP domains. Capacity can be placed near sources while control and mixing remain elsewhere, reducing analogue cable distance and central-rack pressure.
Public launch coverage does not yet list every module, protocol, channel limit or redundancy option. Engineering teams should wait for complete specifications and test clocking, discovery, control and failover with their existing AoIP and console environment.
