The Alliance for Open Media has assembled an early AV2 implementation ecosystem at IBC2026. More than a dozen member companies are participating, with demonstrations spanning encoding, decoding, playback, compliance, interoperability and device characterisation.
Intel is showing the open-source SVT-AV2 software encoder. Allegro DVT is demonstrating multistream playback, bitstream inspection and compliance tooling, Ittiam is applying a device-lab framework across Android hardware, and NVIDIA is presenting a visual comparison between AV1 and AV2.
AOMedia says AV2 delivers about 30% greater compression efficiency than AV1 on objective metrics across a range of material. The specification also targets multistream and multiview composition, higher frame rates, HDR and real-time communication, while remaining under the alliance’s royalty-free patent policy.
Those claims do not establish production performance for every content type or implementation. Encoder speed, decoder power, hardware availability, packaging, patent risk and subjective quality all need independent testing. The IBC work shows ecosystem formation, not universal device support.
