Dawn Technology has presented an open-source method for integrating C2PA provenance into news production. Developed with Media Campus NL and tested with Dutch broadcaster VPRO, the work aims to carry origin and edit history through a real editorial workflow rather than attach credentials only at final publication.
The implementation combines C2PA manifests with Creator Assertions Working Group credentials so a publisher can verify an authorised contributor without necessarily disclosing personal information. It also uses an independently operated trust list and includes a signing tool, validation service and TypeScript SDK work.
VPRO’s Tegenlicht programme provides the pilot environment. The project is designed to expose technical and organisational lessons publicly, giving other newsrooms an inspectable reference for certificate handling, editorial roles and verification rather than tying provenance to a closed vendor platform.
C2PA proves claims and modification history, not whether a report is true. Distribution platforms may still strip metadata, identity governance remains operationally sensitive, and the pilot has not yet published broad measurements of verification success across common social, broadcast and web delivery paths.
