Dolby Laboratories has acquired a video-compression intellectual-property portfolio originating at Florida Atlantic University. The university says the transaction covers 683 assets, including 250 granted patents and 73 US patents.
Sixteen US patents in the portfolio are described as declared essential to Versatile Video Coding and included in the Access Advance VVC patent pool. Ownership had previously been assigned by FAU to OPS, which completed the sale to Dolby. The university characterises VVC as capable of roughly halving data use versus HEVC at comparable visual quality, depending on content and implementation.
Why it matters
Control of standard-essential patents can influence licensing and implementation economics even when the technical standard itself remains open to multiple vendors. Deal value, continuing royalty arrangements, Dolby's licensing strategy and any direct integration into products were not disclosed.
