Blackmagic Design has introduced UltraStudio Express HD, a compact capture and playback interface for USB4 and Thunderbolt 4 computers. The bus-powered unit handles SD and HD formats up to 1080p60 in 10-bit YUV, with 12-bit RGB available up to 1080p30 and 2K DCI. Blackmagic lists the one-third-rack-width device at $639 and supports Mac, Windows and Linux hosts.
The connection set is aimed at mixed modern and legacy facilities. It includes one switchable 3G-SDI input, two 3G-SDI outputs that can operate as fill and key, an HDMI 1.4b monitoring output, component or composite analog video input and two balanced or unbalanced analog audio inputs. Tri-level or black-burst reference and RS-422 deck control allow the unit to sit in an archive, edit or graphics chain rather than function only as a laptop capture dongle.
The technical value is the combination of legacy ingest and synchronous broadcast output over one 40 Gb/s USB-C host link. A facility can connect tape decks or analog sources while retaining embedded SDI audio, RP-188 timecode and real-time colour-space conversion. Blackmagic's Desktop Video 16.5 software adds product support, and the company publishes compatibility with editing, graphics, ingest and streaming applications through its Desktop Video platform.
The product remains an HD interface, not a replacement for Blackmagic's 12G-SDI UltraStudio models. It has no HDMI input, no analog output and no dedicated timecode connector, while the host must provide a USB-C port with a 40 Gb/s signalling rate. Blackmagic has not published measured end-to-end latency, sustained multi-application performance or independent interoperability results. Regional shipping timing and field reliability also remain unverified beyond the official product and driver listings.
