Avid has released Media Composer 2026.8 with support for running Enterprise Shared Projects on qualified third-party shared storage. Until now, that collaborative project model was tied more closely to Avid NEXIS. Avid says the NEXIS Standard tier can now also host Enterprise Shared Projects, lowering the entry point inside its own storage range.
The release adds PhraseFind AI Multicam Auto Cut, which uses transcript analysis to build a first-pass multicamera sequence. Avid also lists support for OpenTimelineIO 2.0, expanded Ready to Edit background processing and browser-based preview and review. The company is positioning these additions as practical steps toward more agent-assisted post-production rather than a replacement for editorial decisions.
Why it matters
Opening shared projects to other storage platforms gives facilities more freedom to separate editing software from infrastructure purchasing. The operational value will depend on the qualification matrix, locking behaviour, performance under load and support responsibilities when Avid and the storage supplier are different companies.
Transcript-driven multicamera assembly could save time on interviews, panels and unscripted material, but it remains a first pass. Editors still need to judge timing, reactions, continuity and the reliability of speech recognition. OTIO 2.0 support is also significant because an open timeline interchange can reduce friction between editorial, finishing and adjacent workflow tools.
What remains open
Avid has not published comprehensive performance comparisons for every third-party storage configuration in the announcement. Facilities should verify supported versions, user counts, failover behaviour and upgrade paths before moving active shared productions.
