Sony Marketing and Sony Corporation built a hybrid live production system for large sports events that could handle more than 90 international, domestic and replay sources.
The architecture used eight Sony M2L-X cloud switchers plus a spare. Because each switcher pre-selector accepts up to 32 inputs, AWS Elemental MediaConnect Router was placed upstream to make the larger source pool available without reintroducing a large physical router.
Why it matters
This is a practical example of cloud production being used to remove a specific scaling constraint rather than replace every on-site function. The design keeps an on-premises environment while extending routing and processing capacity into cloud infrastructure.
For engineers, the critical questions are operational: how tally, source naming, timing, monitoring and failover cross the boundary between physical and cloud systems. Source count alone is not the hard part. Operators need deterministic control and a clear degradation mode if the wide-area connection or a cloud component fails.
