ESPN has rebuilt Studio W at its Bristol campus as a large-scale tracked production environment for NFL Live and other sports programming. The 8,900-square-foot studio contains more than 9,200 square feet of LED surfaces representing 148 million pixels.
The facility combines camera tracking, real-time virtual environments, display automation and a new lighting system. ESPN says the core engineering challenge was allowing multiple cameras to photograph the same rendered environment simultaneously while maintaining synchronisation and image quality.
Studio W is the first ESPN facility in Bristol described as capable of both 1080p HDR and UHD production. It made an initial on-air appearance during ABC college-football coverage and is scheduled to become the permanent home of NFL Live, with additional college football, NHL and fantasy programming.
The announcement provides scale and workflow goals but not the vendor architecture, rendering latency, genlock design, colour-management pipeline or redundancy model. Those details will determine how reusable the approach is beyond ESPN's purpose-built environment.
