Ross Video is promoting a pooled-resource approach for news production with Carbonite HyperMax, allowing switching capacity to be reassigned between studios and productions.
The platform runs on Ultrix routing infrastructure and accepts up to eight SDPE processing blades in supported frames. A blade can be configured for different processing roles, so routine programmes can share the system while a major election, sports event or breaking story temporarily receives more resources.
Why it matters
News facilities are usually sized either for an expensive annual peak or for daily output plus temporary buildouts. Software-configured pooling offers a third model: keep physical capacity installed, but move the logical production resources to the show that needs them.
The operational question is whether reallocation is safe and simple enough for a newsroom. Change control, licence availability, panel mapping, multiviewers, redundancy and failure domains matter more than theoretical utilisation. A pool that creates one large blast radius can be less resilient than smaller fixed rooms.
