Tamron has announced a Nikon Z version of the 20-40mm F2.8 Di III VXD, more than three years after the Sony E-mount model appeared. The full-frame range moves from ultrawide coverage to a near-normal field of view without changing lenses.
A constant F2.8 aperture supports consistent exposure through the zoom range, while the VXD linear motor is intended to provide fast, quiet autofocus. At about 385 grams, the lens is light enough to reduce balancing pressure on compact gimbals and handheld rigs.
The focal range is particularly useful for walk-throughs, interiors, environmental interviews and self-operated pieces where 24mm may not be wide enough. Reaching 40mm also allows a tighter composition without immediately moving to a second lens.
The announcement does not quantify focus breathing, parfocal behaviour, distortion after correction, autofocus transitions or weather-sealing performance. Video crews should test those characteristics on the intended Nikon body, especially when zooming during a shot or relying on electronic correction.
