Icelandic telecommunications and media group Sýn has selected additional Open Broadcast Systems encoders and decoders for low-latency broadcast transport over IP. The deployment spans compact multichannel systems for field contribution and larger units installed in the broadcaster’s master-control environment.
Using a software-based codec architecture across both locations gives Sýn a common operational model while allowing different form factors for mobile and fixed work. The supplier says the systems are intended to maintain consistent picture quality and latency across Iceland’s varied operating and environmental conditions.
A shared software platform can simplify feature updates and make codec capacity less dependent on one specialised appliance generation. It may also reduce the translation required when a contribution feed moves from a remote site into central routing, monitoring and onward distribution.
The announcement does not identify codecs, resolutions, bitrates, transport protocols, measured latency, redundancy design or the number of channels deployed. It also supplies no performance data from difficult Icelandic links. Those omissions prevent a direct comparison with bonded, JPEG XS, SRT or other contribution architectures.
