Sony has introduced FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS and FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS full-frame E-mount primes. The 400mm weighs about 994 grams and the 600mm about 995 grams, with the centre of gravity moved closer to the camera and tripod mount.
Both lenses use two XD Linear Motors and are compatible with the Alpha 9 III’s 120fps continuous shooting with autofocus and auto-exposure tracking. Built-in optical stabilisation works with camera-body Active Mode and coordinated stabilisation, while breathing compensation supports motion work where changes in angle of view during focus pulls would be distracting.
The optical design includes three Super ED elements, one ED element and Nano AR Coating II. Four focus-hold buttons, a function ring, focus limiter and stabilisation-mode controls are distributed around the barrel. Optional teleconverters extend the 400mm to 800mm and the 600mm to 1200mm.
Shipping is planned for October at $2,699 and $3,699 respectively. Sony’s lightest-in-class claim is manufacturer-supplied, and independent tests have not yet established autofocus consistency, stabilisation performance, focus breathing after correction or optical compromises introduced by the relatively modest apertures.
