Sonnet has announced the Breakaway Box 850 T5, an external GPU enclosure for compatible Windows 11 computers. It uses an 80Gbps Thunderbolt 5 connection and accepts supported desktop graphics cards from NVIDIA or AMD.
The unit also operates as a dock, providing three 10Gbps USB-A ports and 5Gb Ethernet. That consolidates graphics expansion, high-speed networking and peripheral connectivity into one cable for a laptop or compact workstation.
For post-production, an external GPU can add rendering, effects and local AI capacity without committing the operator to a tower at every location. The available performance will still be bounded by Thunderbolt bandwidth, driver support and the application’s use of the selected GPU.
The report does not provide application benchmarks, supported-card list, acoustic measurements, sustained power behaviour or hot-plug guidance for production software. It is a Windows-focused announcement, and compatibility must be checked against the exact host, GPU and driver combination.
