Sonnet Technologies has released the Solo10G T5, a bus-powered Thunderbolt 5 to 10GBASE-T adapter. The device supports Mac, Windows and Linux computers as well as M-series iPad Pro models, giving portable production systems access to copper 10 Gigabit Ethernet.
It reaches 10GbE over Cat 6 or Cat 6A and can negotiate 5Gb, 2.5Gb and 1Gb rates over Cat 5e or better when connected to compatible network equipment. Sonnet positions it for large media transfers, shared storage and other bandwidth-heavy professional video work.
The adapter draws 7.5 watts from the host, requires no external supply and uses a fanless aluminium enclosure. Thunderbolt certification includes electrical and interoperability testing, while authenticated firmware is intended to restrict updates to manufacturer-authorised images.
The product is available as model SOLO10G-TB5 for 199.99 US dollars. The source does not publish sustained throughput, thermal results, jumbo-frame behaviour or performance with particular storage systems, so production teams should test their intended host, switch, cabling and shared-storage workload.
