The South African Broadcasting Corporation is upgrading its Johannesburg production centre with 14 Ikegami UHK-X600 cameras. The first phase covers four news, presentation and production studios, with the wider programme intended to reach all 11 studios at the site.
Each camera is paired with a VFL-P700AD seven-inch viewfinder and an Ethernet-capable OCP-500 control panel. The project also includes two MCP-300 network master panels and two BSX-100 base stations. Media-over-IP boards in the base stations are intended to connect with an Evertz SMPTE ST 2110 core router.
SABC plans to begin in SDI and migrate in stages. That hybrid approach limits the operational risk and capital impact of replacing an entire studio chain at once. The UHK-X600 is an HD system camera based on three oversampling UHD CMOS sensors, with optional 4K, high-frame-rate and ST 2110 capabilities.
