Nikon is investing in next-generation image processors, sensors and video cameras while exploring a modular platform that could underpin several future products, according to executive comments reported from a Nikkei interview.

The concept would allow different image processors, sensors, AI chips, memory-card slots and wireless hardware to be combined more quickly for different camera bodies. If implemented, that could shorten development cycles and create more consistent processing and connectivity across stills, cinema and hybrid products.

Nikon also described AI use beyond autofocus, including image selection, while noting existing AI support for automatic white balance, exposure and subject recognition. The broader group of camera makers interviewed continued to distinguish capture assistance from generative image creation inside cameras.

This is an early strategy discussion, not a product announcement. Nikon has not named models, interfaces, release dates or a commitment to user-replaceable modules. The word modular therefore refers to an internal development framework unless the company later specifies a different implementation.
