The BBC has refurbished the Match of the Day studio at Media City Studios in Salford, replacing green-screen presentation with a permanent extended-reality installation. The approach was initially developed for the broadcaster’s coverage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup before moving into regular BBC One production.
The volume uses ROE Visual Ruby RB1.5 wall panels with a 1.5mm pixel pitch and Black Marble BM2 LED flooring. The floor panels have a bespoke surface finish developed for the permanent set rather than the standard glossy treatment.
BBC Sport says the combination of LED, set extension, high-end graphics and rapid metadata exchange makes a smaller room appear substantially larger on air. AE Live and Megapixel are also part of the production pipeline, linking graphics and screen processing to the physical installation.
