Vodafone, Telefónica, Deutsche Telekom and RTL Deutschland have reported a live-production field trial during a DFB Cup match at Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion. The partners used modern 5G functions under real crowd load rather than limiting the exercise to a lab.

A Quality on Demand interface exposed network parameters to the production workflow, while network slicing reserved capacity and a stable data rate for a camera feed. The trial also carried fan-interview video, live commentary, programme return and voice coordination between crews and the control room.

The important change is operational: a broadcaster could request defined connectivity characteristics through an API instead of treating a mobile link as an opaque best-effort path. That may reduce dedicated RF infrastructure for selected positions while keeping network policy visible to production tools.

The partners say the selected workflows met bandwidth, latency and media-quality needs, but have not published measurements, codec settings, failure tests or commercial terms. The result supports further development; it does not yet prove that ordinary public networks can replace every broadcast contribution link.
